Access Devices
The delivery of complex treatment in an in-patient or ambulatory
(includes home) setting requires using a variety of devices
for accessing venous, intraspinal, arterial, peritoneal and
intra-ventricular body systems.
The Oncology Nursing Society (2004) did an extensive literature
search on access devices and developed guidelines based on
the synthesis of evidence which focused on strict hand washing
and a consistent approach to maintenance care (with the use
of aseptic technique). There are gaps in the nursing literature
for guiding nursing practice as it relates to maintenance
care.
