Symptom Management

Assessment and providing intervention to alleviate cancer related or cancer treatment related symptoms is challenging since symptoms often occur in clusters. Thorough systematic assessment and understanding how symptoms interact is an important first step in providing effective symptom management. Strategies implemented to alleviate one symptom must not exacerbate another. Recent studies have found that certain symptoms have a tendency to occur together. (Gift, Jablonski, Stommel, Given, 2004).

Oncology Nurses can have a significant impact on the quality of life of patients by providing patients with strategies to manage the symptoms of cancer and care treatment.
