Special Populations - Aboriginal Peoples

The profile of incidence and morbidity of cancers differs from the general population in Ontario. For example cervical cancer is 1.73 time higher in Status Indians. There is a diverse regional Aboriginal population:

  • Cultural diversity –Cree, Ojibwa, Iroquois
  • Christian and “traditional” spiritual paths
    Mohawks (Iroquois – Six Nations) of the Bay of Quinte – Tyendinaga 2037 on reserve (5393 0ff reserve)
  • Hiawatha (Mississauga of Rice Lake) 188 on reserve (233 off reserve)
  • Golden Lake (Algonquin); Whitney, and Bancroft areas.
  • Cree Patients from Moose Factory
  • 2000-3000 in rural communities
