Geriatric Oncology
Oncology nurses provide care to older persons with cancer
across the care continuum. Many nurses who care for older
adults with cancer have little knowledge of the specialty
of gerontological nursing, which focuses on the special needs
of older adults.
Cancer is primarily a disease of the older Canadian, particularly
men. Among men, 75% of new cancer cases and 82% of deaths
related to cancer occur in those age 60 and over. Among women,
63% of new cases and 78% of deaths related to cancer occur
in those over 60 and over .
