Rural Population

Rural communities face unique challenges for receiving cancer care due to issues such as:

  • Geographic remoteness-impacts ability to obtain health services on a timely basis, close to home, transportation, inclement weather etc.
  • Low-density populations-low economies of scale therefore making costs of services and program higher than in more densely populated areas.
  • Fewer Physicians, Registered Nurses, Nurse Practitioners and other Regulated Healthcare Professionals.
  • Reduced timely access to Tertiary Care Centres.
  • Decreased availability of community based services and non-acute care resources.

Oncology nurses providing care across the cancer continuum e.g. screening, cancer treatment need to be aware of these challenges to advocate and support patients.
