People with a cancer diagnosis or parents with children who have cancer, require
information to better understand their diagnosis, the impact on them and their
family, and to participate fully in decision-making regarding their treatment
plan. An integral component of holistic oncology nursing care involves
providing, discussing and interpreting medical information for the patient and
their family. The needs of the patient and their preferred learning style would
be assessed by the nurse before embarking on an educational session.
Educational strategies can include individual and group sessions, written
materials, videos, computer training, and reliable use of the internet.
