Spiritual Support Health care is a social process in which the nurse and the
patient brings a set of beliefs, expectations and practices to the encounter.
Spirituality encompasses both organized religion, and the more personal beliefs
that an individual has assimilated through personal experience.
The patient’s perspective examines spirituality as a coping mechanism that
assists patients to make meaning of the cancer experience. (Development of a
Clinical Practice Guideline for Spiritual Care, Abstract Sue Morrison , 14th
Annual CANO Conference).
It is critical that the oncology nurse respects and incorporates the personal
beliefs of the individual patient into the plan of care and faciliate referrals
to expert spiritual care providers.
