Systemic Therapy Nursing Practice Standards
Increasing numbers of patients are receiving systemic therapy (chemotherapy,
biotherapy and immunotherapy) in conjunction with surgery, and/or radiation
therapy. Research has resulted in many changes in chemotherapy, biotherapy, and
immunotherapy. Oncology nurses need to be familiar with current drug regimens
and their acute and late side effects.
Cancer Care Ontario (CCO) through its Systemic Therapy Advisory Committee
endorsed the adoption of the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS)Chemotherapy and
Biotherapy Guidelines and Recommendations for Practice and Guidelines for Safe
Handling of Hazardous Drugs (in absence of Canadian Guidelines) for Systemic
Therapy Nursing.
RONC unanimously endorsed these Guidelines to be used through out the Region of
Southeastern Ontario for standardizing nursing practice. The adoption of these
Guidelines ensures consistency of practice in chemotherapy and biotherapy,
while supporting and providing patients with safe quality care:
