The Oncology Clinic at Quinte Health Care –
Belleville site was founded in 1972 by Dr. Douglas MacIntosh,
with a goal to offer cancer care closer to home for patients
in our district. The clinic has evolved with the cancer services
offered by Quinte Health Care.
Quinte Health Care consists of four sites – Belleville,
Picton, Trenton and Bancroft. The corporation has completed
an extensive Population Health Assessment for Hastings and
Prince Edward Counties located in this southeast region of
Ontario. The district covers 7,000 square kilometres and is
an urban/rural area. The population of the two counties is
approximately 151,000. Annual new cancer cases in 2001 for
Hasting and Prince Edward Counties were 422 per 100,000 population.
Cancer Care Services at Quinte Health Care include:
- Radiation Therapy Consultation and Follow-up Clinic
- Ontario Breast Screening Program – Belleville General,
Picton and Trenton
- Inpatient Oncology support, Medicine and Surgery at all
sites
- Palliative Care support
- Clinical Trials
- Access Center, (Home Care)
- Psychosocial support through the Crisis Center
- Education support and Clinical Resource for Hospital
staff and Community Agencies
Adult Ambulatory Oncology Care Clinic:
The Oncology Outpatient Clinic is located at the Belleville
site. Consultation, assessment, treatment, follow-up and supportive
care are provided primarily for breast, colorectal, lung,
lymphoma, and multiple myeloma. Other cancers are also treated.
We work closely with the Cancer Center of Southeastern Ontario
at Kingston General Hospital who provide radiation and cancer
care not available at our center.
In the year 2003-2004, the clinic had 5837 visits with a
projected increase to 6,400 visits for 2004-2005.
We provide patient centered multidisciplinary care, reflective
of the Cancer Care Ontario and the Canadian Association of
Nurses in Oncology (CANO) Standards of Care.
The Team includes the Medical Oncologist, Registered Nurses,
Pharmacist, Dietician, Palliative Care, Home Care support,
Pastoral Care, Clerical and Volunteer services. We have access
to Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, and a Crisis Intervention
Team.
Our Clinic Nurses are proficient with the latest treatments
and administration techniques. Their specialized knowledge
makes them an excellent resource for patients and other health
care workers.

Community Support
The Clinic would not be what it is today without the community
support it has received through the years, and continues to
receive today.
