Education

People with a cancer diagnosis or parents with children who have cancer, require information to better understand their diagnosis, the impact on them and their family, and to participate fully in decision-making regarding their treatment plan.

An integral component of oncology nursing care involves providing, discussing and interpreting medical information for the patient and their family. The needs of the patient and their preferred learning style would be assessed by the nurse before embarking on an educational session. Educational strategies can include individual and group sessions, written materials, videos, computer training, and reliable use of the internet.

Today nurses must engage in life-long learning to maintain the knowledge base in response to advancing cancer knowledge, technology and treatment modalities. (CANO Standards of Care, Roles and Competencies, 2002)
